Osprey Wilds Day 3
We ended our 3 day adventure with two final classes. Ms. Anderson's class tried the twining activity, and Ms. Loesch's class enjoyed Survivor. It was a wonderful final day.
Osprey Wilds Environmental Center Day 1
We had a GREAT second day at the Audubon Center. After a pretty terrific night's sleep, students were ready for a action filled day. Ms. Loesch's students participated in Wolves of the Northwoods, Total Team and Rock Climbing. Mrs. Anderson's students enjoyed Total Team, Rock Climbing and Survivor. The day was beautiful with sunshine, blue skies, and crisp, cold air. Everyone worked together so nicely throughout the day.
Osprey Wilds Environmental Center Day 1
We had a GREAT first day at Osprey Wilds. The students have been such great kids as they learn and explore the wonderful natural area. We had three classes today. We all participated in an orientation class called Wonders of the Wilderness. After that, Mrs. Anderson's class enjoyed Wolves of the Northwoods and Mrs. Loesch's class learned how to make twine like the Ojibwe did long ago. In the evening we had a fabulous program about the Hinckley Fire, played games, drank cocoa and had s'mores. It was a great first day! There are multiple pictures from today on the photo page.
Toys for Tots
The fifth/sixth graders had another great year of raising money for Toys for Tots. We held 3 Friday Float sales and raised approximately $500.00 for toys for tots. The fifth/sixth graders enjoyed their annual shopping trip and a trip to the Great Hall for the delivery of their toys. More photos on the photo page.
Halloween Orienteering with Saint John's Outdoor University
The fifth and sixth graders spent part of Halloween afternoon enjoying a orienteering field trip with Saint John's Outdoor University. The weather turned out to be refreshing and everyone had fun working their way through the orienteering course. Thank you Saint John's Outdoor University for a great afternoon. Trick or Treat
The fifth and sixth graders enjoyed celebrating Halloween in school. They painted pumpkins, went trick or treating throughout the school and enjoyed a field trip with Saint John's Outdoor University. Check out the photo page for many great photos from our Halloween fun!
Painting Pumpkins!
This week's fun just continues! Today the fifth and sixth graders spent time painting pumpkins. One of tomorrow's events will be to find out who created the favorite pumpkins for this year. More photos on the photo page.
What is Our Minnesota Story Celebration Event
After 2 1/2 months of work, the fifth and sixth graders were finally ready to present their learning! Students gathered with parents to share their Minnesota sculptures and their own personal Minnesota stories. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed the delicious apple crisp made earlier in the day. The fifth and sixth graders had a busy day in school today. Besides doing a final rehearsal for their Celebration of Minnesota evening, they made apple crisp to serve as a snack after the presentations. There are more photos on the photo page.
Service Project with Saint John's Outdoor University
On Friday afternoon the 5/6th graders enjoyed gathering seeds from the prairie to help start a new prairie. While Mrs. Anderson took many, many pictures without a card in her camera, Jill Pauly came to the rescue with a few pictures. Thanks Mrs. Pauly! There are more photos on the photo page.
Paddling with Wilderness Inquiry
It was cold and windy for our paddle on Lake Sagatagan with Wilderness Inquiry. The fifth and sixth graders enjoyed paddling in Voyageur style canoes. The groups paddled while singing voyageur songs. It was a wonderful morning on Lake Sag. More photos on the photo page.
Fall Lunch Time Chapel Walk
On Wednesday afternoon, the sixth graders grabbed their lunches and headed out on the chapel walk. The woods was beautiful and filled with the colors of autumn. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and everyone seemed to have an enjoyable walk. The best part was that no one fell along the muddy trail! There are more photos on the photo page.
Mille Lacs Field Trip
The fifth and sixth graders had a great day at the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Kathio State Park. We made dream catchers, visited the Four Season Room, toured the museum and played Ojibwe games. At the state park we enjoyed an great hike led by naturalist Erin and climbed the fire tower. There are more pictures on the photo page.
Earthworm Lab
The 5/6 graders spent a couple hours in the woods this morning being citizen scientist. They collected data on earthworms found in the woods. Please ask your child to share with you what they've learned about earthworms in the forest! More photos on the photo page.
Biome Field Trip with Saint John's Outdoor U!
The fifth/sixth graders enjoyed their first field trip with Saint John's Outdoor University. They explored the arboretum to learn about Minnesota's original biomes. Students took observations of sunlight, wind, soil and air temperature, animals and vegetation. We couldn't have had a better day for this trip as it was sunny and windy! It was a great day for a walk in the prairie, deciduous, and coniferous forest. More photos on the photo page
Chapel Walk with PB and Johnny Bread
The5th/ 6th graders had a beautiful day for our first chapel walk. It was a delightful walk. Thanks to a tremendous group of parent volunteers, the Johnny bread, peanut butter and jelly was quickly distributed. Students enjoyed playing by the water. No one fell in!! More photos on the photo page
Swimming in Lake Sagatagan
The fifth and sixth graders spent the afternoon swimming at Lake Sagatagan. It was a perfect day to get to know new friends. The beach was not crowded so these new friends had plenty of opportunity to get to know each other. They all seemed to play so well together. There are a lot more pictures on the photo page.

Spring Writing in Our Spots

Maple Syrup Outdoor University Field Trip
The sixth graders spent a delightful afternoon with the Saint John's Outdoor University staff. We learned all about the process of making maple syrup. It was a beautiful day in the sugar bush. The sixth graders tapped trees and collected maple sap. There are many more photos on the photo page.
Lumberjack Day
Our fourth interim day was filled with fun! Sixth graders started the day by learning about what life was like in a lumber camp in the late 1800s. They learned about the different roles in a lumber camp and lumberjack lingo. After the introduction to life as a lumberjack, the students played Lumberjack Bingo. Next they tackled some lumberjack math and figured out the amount of food the Cook would need to order to feed 70 hungry jacks. After tackling the math, the students were treated to a family style lumberjack breakfast. Students ate sweat pads, logging berries, spuds, cold shuts, porkbelly and blackjack. Interim Trip to the Audubon Center of the Northwoods
The sixth graders had a fabulous trip to the Audubon Center of the Northwoods. The weather was perfect! The students were so open to trying so many new things! It was a great trip.
Reader's Theater Performance at Barnes and Noble
Nine sixth grade students performed at Barnes and Nobel on Sunday for our Saint John's Prep book fair. These students gave up several of their lunch time recesses to practice 4 different story selections. They did an amazing job!
Making Pie for Thanksgiving
On the day before our Thanksgiving break, the sixth graders enjoyed learning to bake pumpkin pie and apple pie. Each small group of students made one pie from crust to oven. We later shared the pie with our parents in the afternoon! More photos on the photo page
Our Visit to the Graveyard
The sixth graders had a beautiful gray day for their visit to the cemetery on campus in conjunction with their reading of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. In the book, the protagonist learns to read by doing grave rubbings. Students enjoyed walking quietly through the graveyard, doing rubbings and reading many of the tombstones. Our Garden Lunch
The sixth graders enjoyed harvesting vegetables from our Prep School garden. Tomatoes, peppers, carrots, squash, and basil were all harvested for our soup! Donations from other gardens gave us a plethora of veggies for a delicious soup lunch. Many more photos on the photo page.
Our First Trip with Saint John's Outdoor University
The sixth graders enjoyed our first field trip with Saint John's Outdoor University. They used a dichotomous tree key to identify trees on the Saint John's campus. More photos on the photo page
