Today was a great day to be a 6th grader at SJP. We had a great day outside with Sarah and got to do some awesome experiments about our animal adaptation. We also got to see a live presentation about Harriet Tubman. Pick your favorite and blog about it!

Today in sience was a rewarding expirience because we collected scat with Bobby. First, we found the scat and placed it in a rubber glove. Next, we placed the scat on a cement block. Last, we took a kit with a tweezers, picks and a glasses lens. The best part was ripping up the scat and seeing the nutrience in it. Sience with the Saint JOhn's Arboretum is a unique expirience.

Today in science class we got to go outside with Sara. Ben and I are studing why rabbits eat their scat for nutrience. We came to a conclusion on that the other types of scat like deer or bobcat. The darker and darker the scat the less nutrients. What we did is picked up the scat with a tweezers, put it in a plastic glove, afterwords disected it with a disection kit. Science with Sara is truly scat-tastic!

Today we went out with Sarah and learned more about the adaptation we are learning in some small groups. The adaptation my group is working on is about the pilated wood pecker and its tongue. The tongue has sharp things comeing out of it and it is sticky which helps to collect bugs.We are makeing and bug proof tent that the bugs will stick to and not come in.This would hopefully be very useful. I'm excited to see how our adaptation project will turn out.

Today we went to a play for Hariot Tubmen. The actress was from alanta, Gerogia. It was so real that I had to blink to remember it was a play. It was amazing how Hariot escaped from slavery and came back to bring more slaves to freedom. And that is what I like the most about today.

In Science,we tested our ideas for our biomimicry invention. My group(Ella, Lorine, and I)had tape, grape jelly, strawberry jelly, and maple syrup to see which one was stickier. First we tested them separatly, putting them on sticks, then poking the sticks into holes to see if they caught any thing. Then, we decided to combine them together. We sprinkled leaves on it and, when we turned it over, they stuck. Just to be sure we sprinkled some more on and realized that the maple syrup was the stickiest.

Hariet Tubman was very exciting and interesting. One fact I didn't know was that she was seperated from her mother when she was only six. Or that she had never seen a table so didn't know how to wash it in the knew house. She was wipped for it by her knew master. Also, I never knew that she had stayed in a pig pen for five days after running away from her master. An interesting fact is that since she was always hungry, she took a sugar cube and ate it.She alsomade nineteen trips in which she rescude over threehundred slaves over an eleven year time period.

I had a lot of fun watching some lady act out the life of Harriet Tubman. It was a treat not having to do normal school work. Yet I was still learning. Later tonight I was watching Simpsons and one of there Long lost relatives was a girl who's family saved slaves. It was a funny co-insudents. But anyways I really liked seeing the lady say and reanact things from Harriet's life. It was very educational and I learned a ton. This was my favorite part of the day.

At the end of the day today, we saw a play about Harriet Tubman. I thought it was excellent because I love history. The women that played Harriet was a great actress and singer. She made me feel like I was literally watching Harriet Tubman's life. I loved it so much; I really hope she comes back to do another play.

Today in science class it was a blast. My group had lot's of fun in designing our invention. Our invention is about wolf paws. The purpose of the experiment is to try to mimic wolf paws. So my group along with Sara, we used Leather slippers to mimic wolf paws. I think I was the luckiest in my group, because I got to run around in the forest like a real wolf. My group members chased me around with boots but they couldn't catch me because of the slippers. In the end my group came up with a knew invention, and it was hiking boots that have more grip and are water proof. It was a lot of fun and we my class is very lucky.

Yesterday we got to test our ideas for our biomimicry unit. Jake,Ryan and I tested some deer hide, leather slipers, and some deer hid gloves. We found out what it is like to be a wolf by waring those items and running around the woods acting like wolves. We figured out that the not so thick leather slipers were not that warm but we could move around alot better than in our normal boots. With these new ideas in our heads my group came up with a new project based on our opservations Special hiking Boots! Sicence with Sarah is almost always fun!!!!

Our last science class was very rewarding. Before this class in science we began to invent a biomimicry invention. My group chose owl talons to make a type of spork-fork kind of tool. Today we began to get a grasp of what our groups invention would look like. First we collected some curved twigs and some pine needles. Once we finished collecting them we began rubber-banding the twigs together so they looked like some owl claws. After the got a claw-looking spork-fork, we began to test our claw by trying to pick up some pine needles. We timed our test to 15 seconds each try. In the beggining our invention deeply failed, but that didn't last for long. Our group and I decided to try to use our invention with two hands instead of one. That was much more successful than the one-handed test. Close to the end, Salma and I began bulldozing our pinecones into a pile instead of picking it up. In the end, it was a lot of fun. I think our class is very lucky to have Sarah giving us such a wonderful oppurtunity like this.

The Harriet Tubman presentation was very interesting. I learned a lot about her childhood and journey to freedom. I thought the woman acting as Harriet Tubman did a really good job. At the end, people were allowed to go up to the stage and ask questions. It was a very nice experience. Comments are closed.
